I’ve been watching on social media the Back to School Dinner tradition incorporated into the family experience for the last few years. I think anytime you can can create a family tradition and incorporate it with a meal time, you set your child (or even grandchildren) up for success. They have data to prove the critical importance of communicating at mealtimes and the direct positive outcome for your child’s self-esteem. This is just another A+ family interactive experience that fosters a positive attitude toward self perception and education. They will learn to associate school with family love and support. Grandmothers, you’re not off the hook, you can do this activity as well! Bring the cousins and siblings together to share and link families together stronger. If preparing a meal is too much, have parents pack them a “sack lunch” meal and Grandma can provide the dessert! This mealtime together can calm fears and brings love and laughter to the table that can set a positive tone for the entire school year. For the theme, I liked the idea of King & Queen of Smarts. I gave each child a gold star crown, because they are going to be gold star students!
For centerpiece ideas, grab a few school supplies and you’re set! I found these darling over-sized pencils through my good friend, Melissa Quigley, over at her darling blog, Hollyhocks and Honeybees. She has an Instagram account HERE if you want to see all her latest news and projects.
I incorporated wood chargers from IKEA and black mat finish plates from the dollar store that gave it a chalkboard texture. I share an easy DIY post to create this easy no-sew notebook “page” canvas tablerunner HERE. If you head to the school supply store, pick up some of those library cards and pockets before they become obsolete! They can serve as place cards or flatware holders. Give Smarties away as one of the favors among other ideas I will share that go with this PRINTABLE. These favors can actually start a great discussion about hard work, navigating through mistakes, and choosing good friends at school. More on that later. I found some novelty notebook paper sacks to hold the candies in place. And of course I love the old flashcards I had as a kid and some retro school books found from a great little online auction on IG, called Posey Vintage found HERE. I loved the handmade glittered gold star crowns on school word strips with their names written in the lines. The King of Smarts and Queen of Smarts handlettered strips can be found in my printable available in my shop HERE . The printable comes with a school themed party favor kit as well. If you wanted to make the crown an interactive project, you could use graphite colored grey yarn and have them sew their name into the crown with large tapestry needles found below. To create the holes to stitch the letters, use a leather punch tool with a smaller hole diameter for the needle to sew through. I love these needles because they are plastic and safe for kids:
Here is a set of the leather punch tools with a variety of sizes for you to choose from:
Share with your family the love and support of their educational pursuits, go ahead, host a Back to School Dinner. You just might decide you wouldn’t want to send them off to the first day of school any other way!
